The Norwegian Merchant Fleet, 2010

The merchant fleet, i.e. vessels registered in the Norwegian International Ship register (NIS) and the Norwegian Ordinary Ship register (NOR), totalled 1 407 vessels at the end of 2010. Total gross tonnage was 15.7 million tonnes.

Vessels registered in NOR

A total of 882 vessels with 1.9 million gross tonnes in total were registered in NOR at the end of 2010. This was a decrease from last year of 17 vessels or 1.9 per cent. Gross tonnage decreased by 0.1 million or 6.3 per cent in the same period. There were four less tankers and 13 less dry cargo vessels registered in NOR compared with the year before.

Vessels registered in NIS

In total, 525 vessels with a gross tonnage of 13.8 were registered in NIS at the end of the year. This is a decrease of 2.2 per cent, both in number of vessels and tonnage from last year. While there was a decrease in tankers of 26 vessels and 0.5 million gross tonnes, there was in increase in dry cargo vessels from 293 vessels with a total gross tonnage of 6.7 million to 307 vessels with a total of 6.8 million gross tonnes.

Ships not included in the merchant fleet

At the end of 2010 there were 14 700 vessels registered in NIS/NOR shipping registers that are not included in the merchant fleet. The types of vessels lean heavily towards fishing and leisure; 6 237 fishing vessels and 5 097 leisure boats.
