Stable merchant fleet

The number of vessels in the merchant fleet decreased by 6 from 2011 to 2012; a decrease of 1 per cent. Gross tonnage had a decrease of 0.1 million tonnes in the same period.

The merchant fleet, vessels registered in the Norwegian International Ship register (NIS) or the Norwegian Ordinary Ship register (NOR), totalled 1 392 vessels at the end of 2012. Total gross tonnage was 15.7 million tonnes.

Vessels registered in NOR

A total of 905 vessels with a total gross tonnage of 2.1 million tonnes were registered in NOR at the end of 2012. This is 14 vessels, or 1.6 per cent, more than last year. Gross tonnage increased by 0.1 million, or 5.0 per cent, in the same period. Twenty-four tankers and 881 dry bulk vessels were registered, which were 317 000 and 1 779 000 gross tonnes respectively.

Vessels registered in NIS

A total of 487 vessels with a gross tonnage of 13.6 million tonnes were registered in NIS at the end of 2012. The number of vessels is down by 3.9 per cent, while gross tonnage is up 0.1 per cent from last year.

Ships not in the merchant fleet

At the end of 2012 there were 16 300 vessels registered in NIS/NOR that were not included in the merchant fleet. Types of vessels here are mainly fishing and leisure; 6 198 fishing vessels and 6 383 leisure boats.
