The Norwegian Merchant Fleet has remained much the same in size and scope for the last four years. The change in the number of vessels and gross tonnage last year is typical for these four years, with 4 fewer ships and a 290 000 drop in tonnage.

The Norwegian Merchant fleet had 1 388 vessels with a gross tonnage of 15 997 000 tonnes at the end of 2013. While the fleet as a whole remains steady, the two registries making up the fleet follow different trajectories. In NOR there were 888 ships with 2 000 000 gross tonnes by the end of 2013. This is a 2 per cent drop in the number of ships and almost 3 per cent more gross tonnage than the year before. NIS on the other hand experienced a growth in both the number of ships and in gross tonnage; both were up 2.5 per cent. There were 500 ships and almost 14 000 000 of gross tonnage in NIS at the end of 2013.
