Few changes in the Norwegian merchant fleet

The number of vessels in Norwegian ship registers remained almost unchanged between 2000 and 2001. Measured in gross tonnage, the Norwegian merchant fleet decreased by 4.1 per cent.

1 631 vessels were registered in Norwegian ship registers by the end of 2001. 52 per cent of all vessels were registered in Norwegian Ordinary Ship Register. The number of vessels registered in the Norwegian Ordinary Ship Register was unchanged from 2000 to 2001. The number of vessels in Norwegian International Ship Register decreased by less than 1 per cent, but the gross tonnage decreased by almost 5 per cent. Almost 1/3 of the vessels registered in Norwegian International Ship Register were foreign owned.

Almost 20 per cent of all vessels in Norwegian Ship Registers are tankers, of which half were oil tankers. 87 per cent of all Norwegian registered gross tonnage was registered in Norwegian International Ship Register.

Almost ¼ of all Norwegian registered ships are 30 years or older. Of all vessels in Norwegian Ordinary Ship Register, almost 40 per cent are 30 years or older.
