Most domestic cargo on NOR vessels
Of the cargo transported between domestic ports in the first half of 2003, 64 per cent were transported on vessels registered in the Norwegian Ordinary Ship Register (NOR).
The number of containers and roro cargo for 2003 are incorrect. New figures will be published within April 2004.
For the first time statistics on cargo by port and nationality of registration, and statistics of cargo by port and commodity are published.
Cargo by nationality of vessels
Of all domestic cargo transported in the first half of 2003, 64 per cent were transported on vessels registered in NOR. 8 per cent of the domestic cargo were transported on vessels registered in Norwegian International Ship Register (NIS), and 28 per cent by vessels registered in foreign ship registers.
Of the cargo transported between Norwegian and foreign ports, 83 per cent were transported on vessels registered in foreign ship registers, while 13 and 4 per cent were transported on NIS and NOR vessels.
23 per cent more containers
Compared with the 2n d quarter last year there was an increase of 23 per cent of all TEU containers (twenty feet equivalent unit) with cargo handled by the big ports in the 2n d quarter this year. The number of TEU containers with cargo over the port of Oslo increased by 45 per cent to 39 450 TEU containers the 2n d quarter this year compared with the 2nd quarter last year.
Commodity
Crude oil and petroleum products, iron ore, crude and manufactured minerals, cement and manufactured building materials constituted the largest volume of commodities by 80 per cent of all cargo handled by the biggest ports. Crude oil and petroleum products alone constituted 57 per cent of all cargo. The port of Bergen represents the biggest portion of this. Non-specified commodity and miscellaneous articles (mostly transported in trucks and containers) constituted 7 per cent of all cargo.
Ferry transport between Norway and foreign countries
In the 2n d quarter this year the ferries in foreign traffic transported 1.,55 million passengers, and.just over half of the passengers were e inbound.
Statistics on ferry services between Norway and foreign countries are from 2003 and onwards published through the maritime transport statistics.
