Less cargo through Norwegian ports in 2003

Norwegian ports handled 186.8 million tonnes of cargo in 2003. This is a decrease of 5 per cent compared with 2002.

Cargo by nationality of registration by the vessel

The large public ports handled 159 million tonnes of cargo in 2003. This constitutes 85 per cent of the total volume of cargo in 2003. The small public ports handled 9 million tonnes of cargo or 5 per cent of the total volume. Private enterprises with their own ports handled 19 million tonnes or 10 per cent of the total volume.

In the fourth quarter of 2003 the ports handled 42.7 million tonnes of cargo. This is a decrease of 2.2 million or 5 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2002. The decrease comes from less vet bulk through Mongstad, Sture and Slagentangen oil terminals, as well as increased volumes of cargo through the ports of Karmsund and Grenland.
