More cargo through Norwegian ports

In 2004 the Norwegian ports handled 180.7 million tonnes of cargo - an increase of 10 per cent compared with 2003

In the fourth quarter the large Norwegian ports handled 46.8 million tonnes cargo. Out of these tonnes 2/3 were transported to foreign ports. The port districts of Bergen, Karmsund and Narvik handled 64 per cent of this.

Most wet bulk

Wet bulk constitutes 58 per cent and dry bulk constitutes 28 per cent of the total amount of cargo transported. Bergen, Karmsund and Tønsberg handled 87 per cent of total wet bulk.

142 402 containers

Measured in TEU 142 402 containers were transported over Norwegian ports in the fourth quarter, 97 per cent of this was lolo containers. The Port of Oslo handled 44 327 containers. The largest ports besides Oslo were the ports of Borg and Larvik, which handled 10 874 and 10 004 containers respectively.

Cargo by nationality of vessel

Out of all domestic cargo transported in the fourth quarter of 2004, 65 per cent were transported by vessels registered in NOR or NIS.

Ferries carried 1.1 million passengers

In the fourth quarter of 2004, 1.1 million passengers were carried on the ferry services to and from Norway - a decrease from 1,2 millions passengers in the fourth quarter of 2003.The Ports of Oslo and Sandefjord accounted for 70 per cent of these passengers.

Local traffic are included from 2004 and constituted 0.5 per cent of all cargo handled.
