More containers - less cargo

The container traffic increased by 8.6 per cent in the 4th quarter 2006 compared with 4th quarter 2005. The total amount of cargo transported decreased by 5.1 per cent.

Measured in TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit) 158 274 containers were transported over Norwegian ports in the 4th quarter 2006. This is an increase of 12 537 containers or 8.6 per cent from the previous year. 7 977 of these were containers with cargo. The port of Oslo accounted for 27 per cent of all containers transported over Norwegian ports. The total amount of cargo carried in the 4th quarter 2006 was 44.1 million tonnes. Wet bulk and dry bulk constitute respectively 56 and 29 per cent of the total amount of cargo carried.

Ferry transport

1.2 million passengers were carried on the ferry services to and from Norway in the 4th quarter of 2006. Compared with the same quarter in 2005 this was a decrease of 7 per cent. 176 801 cars and motorcycles were carried on ferries to and from Norway. This is an increase of 7.2 per cent compared with 4th quarter 2005.

Coastal Express Liner

73 634 passengers travelled by the Norwegian Coastal Liner in the 4th quarter 2006. This is approximately 500 less than in the same period in 2005. The numbers of passengers travelling southbound were 33 415 and 40 219 travelled on northbound route.
