Increasing container traffic
166 500 TEU (twenty foot equivalent unit) containers were transported between Norwegian ports the second quarter of 2007. This is an increase of 22 000 units or 15.2 per cent compared with the same quarter in 2006.
Out of the 166 500 TEU containers transported the second quarter, 124 000 units contained cargo. The largest container port was Oslo Port which loaded or unloaded 48 000 containers, in which 33 000 or 68.9 per cent contained cargo. TEU containers totalled 1.2 million tonnes, an increase of 13.2 per cent compared with the corresponding period in 2006.
Continued decrease of transport of liquid bulk cargo
The total amount of goods handled in Norwegian ports the second quarter of 2007 was 45.0 tonnes. This is a decrease of 1.6 million tonnes or 3.4 per cent compared with the second quarter of 2006. The liquid bulk transport was 23.4 million tonnes, down by 2.3 million tonnes or 8.8 per cent. Dry bulk cargo however, increased by 0.5 million tonnes or 3.7 per cent in the same period. Liquid and dry bulk are the most important cargo types, and constituted 83.7 per cent of the total the second quarter. 64.2 per cent of the tonnes handled the second quarter were in international traffic. This is about the same as in 2006.
More passengers and vehicles transported by international ferries
Around 1.6 million passengers travelled by ferry between Norway and international ports the second quarter. This is an increase of 116 200 passengers, or 7.7 per cent compared with the second quarter 2006. Oslo was the most important port, where 649 000 passengers embarked or disembarked. As for transport of passenger cars, motorcycles and accompanying trailers/caravans, Kristiansand port was the most important. 295 000 such units were transported the second quarter, out of these 88 000 were transported through Kristiansand port. During the second quarter of 2007 there were 1 864 calls by ferries in international service in Norwegian ports.
Almost unchanged number of calls
Norwegian ports saw 18 600 calls the second quarter. This is about the same traffic as in 2006. Bulk vessels increased by 163 calls, while tankers experienced a downfall of 267 port calls compared with the same period in 2006. The most important vessel type in Norway measured in port movements is general cargo vessels, which saw 8 748 calls in the second quarter of 2007.
Fewer passengers on the Norwegian Coastal Voyage
145 500 passengers travelled on the Norwegian Coastal Voyage the second quarter of 2007. This was 8.6 per cent fewer passengers compared with the same quarter in 2006.
