More liquid bulk

A total of 37.8 million tonnes of goods were transported between the largest Norwegian ports in the first quarter of 2009. This is 2 million tonnes less than the first quarter of 2008. Liquid bulk, however, increased by 2 million tonnes over the same period.

Overall transport of liquid bulk was 22.4 million tonnes; representing 59 per cent of all goods transported in the first quarter of 2009. The corresponding share in the first quarter of 2008 was 51 per cent. Domestic transport of goods increased by 3.9 per cent to 13.8 million tonnes, while international transport of goods fell by 8.9 per cent to 23.6 million tonnes. Liquid bulk to and from Bergen and Omland Port Authority was 14.6 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2009.

Dry bulk transport falling

A total of 9.4 million tonnes of dry bulk were transported during the first quarter of 2009. This is 3.2 million tonnes, or 25 per cent less than the first quarter of 2008. Dry bulk through Narvik fell by almost 50 per cent between the first quarter of 2008 and the first quarter of 2009.

Goods in TEU containers totalled 1 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2009; 160 000 tonnes or 13.8 per cent less than the first quarter of 2008. The number of TEU containers with cargo fell in the same period by 14 thousand to 100.4 thousand in the first quarter of 2009. TEU containers without cargo went up by 2 700 TEU containers.

Annual statistics: less goods across Norwegian ports in 2008

During 2008, a total of 192.4 million tonnes of goods were handled at Norwegian ports. This is 7.4 million tonnes less than in 2007, representing a reduction of 3.7 per cent. Store Norske Spitsbergen Grubekompani AS at Svalbard has been included in the figures for smaller ports since 2008.

Fewer passengers travel the coast

A total of 63 000 passengers travelled with the Coastal Express Liner during the first quarter of 2009. This is 14 000 less than the first quarter of 2008. It is worth noting that the Easter holiday fell in the first quarter of 2008 but in the second quarter of 2009.
