Stable transport of goods in Norwegian ports

There was an increase of 0.3 per cent in the transport of goods to and from the largest Norwegian ports in the 4th quarter of 2009 compared with the 4th quarter of 2008. A total of 42.4 million tonnes goods were transported in the 4th quarter of 2009.

Of the total cargo volume of 42.4 million tonnes in the 4th quarter of 2009, 27 million tonnes were sent to or from foreign ports. This amounted 64 per cent of all goods. This was the same as in the 4th quarter of 2008.

Increase in dry bulk and container cargo

In the 4th quarter 2009 dry bulk transport was 13.8 million tonnes, an increase of 2.6 per cent compared to same period in 2008. Dry bulk was the second largest cargo type. Narvik Port was the largest port within dry bulk in Norway with 4.4 million tonnes in the 4th quarter of 2009. Goods in TEU containers totalled 1.2 million tonnes in the 4th quarter of 2009, a decrease of 6.5 per cent compared with same quarter of 2009. TEU containers with cargo went by 2 200 to 109 700 TEU containers.

Less transport of liquid bulk

A total of 21.8 million tonnes liquid bulk was transported in the 4th quarter of 2009. This is 0.3 million tonnes less than in the 4th quarter in 2008. Liquid bulk to and from Bergen and Omland Port Authority in the 4th quarter of 2009 was 12.2 million tonnes, 0.8 million tonnes less than same quarter in 2008.

Fewer travellers with international ferries

During the 4th quarter of 2009 74 500 less passengers travelled with the international ferries, representing a reduction of 6.5 per cent. Totally 1.1 million passengers travelled with the international ferries in the 4th quarter of 2009.

More passengers in December on the Coastal Express Liner

In December 2009, 1 500 more passengers travelled with the Coastal Express Liner, compared with the same month in 2008. Totally 66 800 passengers travelled either north or south route along the Norwegian coast in the 4th quarter of 2009. This was a reduction of 3.6 per cent from the same quarter in 2008.
