Increased transport in dry bulk
The transport of dry bulk to and from the largest Norwegian ports had an increase of 3.0 million 1 tonnes in the 1st quarter of 2012 from the 1st quarter of 2011. 35 per cent 1 of the total amount was dry bulk.
A total of 15.4 million tonnes of dry bulk were transported in the 1st quarter of 2012. The corresponding figure for the same period in 2011 was 13 million tonnes. Narvik port was the largest dry bulk port, primarily iron ore, with 4.9 million tonnes in the 1st quarter of 2012.
Slight increase in the total cargo
A total of 44.9 million 1 tonnes of goods were transported in the 1st quarter of 2012; an increase of 7.4 per cent 1 compared to the same period in 2011. Most cargo was transported to or from Bergen and Omland port in this period, with 14.0 million 1 tonnes; an inrease 2 of 3.0 per cent 1 compared to the same quarter in 2011. Of the total 44.9 million 1 tonnes, 64 per cent was transported to or from a foreign port.
Increased container traffic
During the 1st quarter of 2012, a total of 174 000 TEU containers were transported, 120 000 of which were loaded with cargo. This is an increase of 3 500, or 3 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2011. The cargo in containers increased by 6 per cent to 1.3 million tonnes.
Slight increase for international ferries
A total of 1.1 million passengers travelled with the international ferries during the 1st quarter of 2012; an increase of 11 000 passengers compared to the same quarter in 2011. The transport of cars, motorcycles and accompanying trailers/caravans, had a decrease of 7 700, or 3.8 per cent in the same period. Oslo and Sandefjord ports had most traffic with these types of cargo.
More passengers with the Coastal Express Liner
During the 1st quarter of 2012, 86 700 passengers travelled with the Coastal Express Liner. This was an increase of 6 700 passengers, or 8.3 per cent compared with the 1st quarter of 2011. North and sound bound routes in February and March had an increase, while January had a decrease.
Annual statistics 2011: More cargo to and from Norwegian ports
In 2011, almost 200 million tonnes of cargo were transported over large and smaller municipal ports. This was 7 million tonnes, or 3.6 per cent less than in 2010.
