More cargo transported by sea
The transport of cargo increased by 1.9 million tonnes from the 2nd quarter in 2011 to the same quarter in 2012. A total of 46.6 million tonnes of cargo were transported in the 2nd quarter of 2012.
Of the total 46.6 million tonnes of goods transported through the largest ports in Norway, 50 per cent was liquid bulk, compared to 47 per cent in the same quarter in 2011. A total of 23.3 million tonnes of liquid bulk were transported; an increase of 11 per cent compared with the same period in 2011. Bergen and Omland port accounted for 57 per cent of the total liquid bulk.
Less cargo with dry bulk
A total of 16.5 million tonnes of dry bulk were transported in the 2nd quarter of 2012. This was 0.7 million tonnes or 4.4 per cent less compared to the 2nd quarter in 2011. Narvik port is the largest port with dry bulk. In the 2nd quarter of 2012, transported dry bulk had a decrease of 19.1 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2011, and accounted for 35 per cent of the total cargo.
Increased container traffic
A total of 173 400 TEU containers were transported in the 2nd quarter of 2012, of which 118 300 were loaded with cargo. This is an increase of 2 400, or 2 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2012. The cargo in containers increased by 3.8 per cent to 1.3 million tonnes.
Slight increase with the international ferries
A total of 1.5 million passengers travelled on international ferries in the 2nd quarter of 2012. This is a decrease of 4 000 passengers compared to the same quarter in 2011. The transport of cars, motorcycles and accompanying trailers/caravans had an increase of 6 300, or 2.0 per cent in the same period.
Fewer taking the Coastal Express Liner
A total of 132 100 passengers travelled on the Coastal Express Liner in the 2nd quarter of 2012. This was a fall of 6 000 passengers, or 4.4 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2011. The greatest decrease took place in June, and related to the number of passengers travelling southwards, with a fall of 4 900 or 7.2 per cent.
