Decline for hotels

Norwegian hotels recorded 1.034 million guest nights in May 2000, against 1.065 million in May last year. In terms of percentage, business declined three per cent. Compared with May 1999, the foreign markets declined and the domestic market inclined.

All the major foreign markets decreased. Sweden had the biggest decline, followed by Great Britain, USA and Germany. The number of overnight stays by Swedish guests fell 31 per cent compared with May 1999.

The incline in business from the domestic market was three per cent, from 753 000 overnight stays in May 1999 to 773 000 overnights stays in May this year.

Decline this year

The business has dropped three per cent so far in 2000. Both the domestic and the foreign business have declined. All the major foreign markets are down compared with January-May 1999.

Higher capacity

Compared with May last year, the capacity of the Norwegian hospitality industry has increased in terms of the number of hotels, beds and rooms.

Lower room price

The average room rate in May was NOK 689, compared with NOK 690 in May last year.
