Record passenger numbers

More than 600 million fares were registered on public transport in 2015. This was an all time high, and about 5 per cent more than in 2014. All modes of transport experienced growth, but boats “won”, with 10 per cent more boardings than in 2014.

Figure 1. Public transport. Number of passengers

Passenger growth occurred despite a slight drop in the number of kilometres produced. The distance travelled by buses, the major mode of public transportation, was 1.3 per cent shorter in 2015 compared to 2014.

Long-term loss for buses

The last milestone, 500 million passengers, was reached in 2010. Since then, transport by boat and on rails have both had 27-28 per cent passenger growth, while buses were faced with only half that figure. At the same time, train kilometres increased by 19.4 per cent. Other means of public transportation were more or less unchanged.

Increased revenues on rails

Ticket revenues have increased by 19 per cent in the last 5 years. Passengers on rails paid 48.2 per cent more in 2015 than in 2010, while boat passengers’ costs only increased by 4.7 per cent. In 2015, passengers paid NOK 1.7 billion more for 234 million fares on rails, than for 356 million fares by bus.
