Increase in bus travel

The number of passengers using public transport showed an increase of 3.0 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011. All of this growth was within bus travel, while boat and rail travel decreased.

The fourth quarter of 2012 was the third successive quarter to show an increase in the use of public transport of more than 4 million passengers compared to the same period one year earlier. While bus travel increased by 5.2 million passengers, boat and rail travel decreased by 525 000 passengers each.

Increased ticket revenues for boat and rail travel

A total of 139 million passengers paid NOK 2.6 billion for public transport services; an increase of 6.1 per cent compared to fourth quarter of 2011. Despite growth in passenger figures, bus ticket revenues remained almost unaltered. The total number of passengers travelling by boat and rail fell by about a million from the fourth quarter of 2011 to the fourth quarter of 2012, but ticket revenues nevertheless rose by NOK 151 million. Almost all extra income was in the rail segment.

Increase in 2012

Overall, the quarters in 2012 show a total increase of 15 million passengers from 2011. The growth was approximately 3 per cent for both bus and rail travel, while boat travel fell 5 per cent.
