Strong growth in public transport

After one quarter of stagnation, public transport showed an increase of 6.0 per cent in the second quarter of 2013 compared to the same period in 2012. The growth was strongest for buses, but transport by boat and rail also showed a new increase.

With a growth of 7.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2013 compared to the same period in 2012, buses made the largest contribution to the total figure of 136 million passengers. Passenger growth for rail was 4.2 per cent and boats had 1.1 per cent more passengers.

Increased ticket revenues

Overall, ticket revenues increased by 10.3 per cent from the second quarter of 2012 and totalled almost NOK 2.8 billion in the second quarter of 2013. Trains had the strongest growth, with 14.2 per cent, which means that passenger transport by rail now accounts for more than half of all ticket revenues.

Buses received a 7.5 per cent increase in ticket revenues, which was almost identical to the passenger growth. Ticket revenues from passengers by boat decreased by 2.5 per cent.

More kilometres offered

The production of public transport grew by 5 million kilometres, or 5.0 per cent, from the second quarter of 2012 to the second quarter of 2013. Transportation by rail had the strongest growth, with an increase of 8.4 per cent, but buses and boats also had significant growth.

Both the bus and boat sectors have been subjected to major structural, contractual and technological changes in recent years. The postponement of tenders, gross contracts and electronic ticketing have all contributed to greater uncertainty in the changes in the supply and demand for public transport.
