Increase in public rail transport

In the third quarter of 2013, the total growth in public passenger transport was 1.6 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2012. The largest contributor to this was the railways, with a 1.6 million rise in train passengers. The number of bus passengers decreased in the same period by 1.3 per cent.

Public transport on rails had 2.5 million more passengers in the third quarter of 2013 compared to the third quarter of 2012. In the same period, there was a strong growth of 13.9 per cent in boat passengers, which reached a total of almost 3 million passengers.

Bus companies had a rare setback of -1.3 per cent, or 879 000 passengers, from the third quarter of 2012 to the third quarter of 2013.

Increased ticket revenues

Overall, ticket revenues increased by 5.1 per cent from the third quarter of 2012 and totalled more than NOK 2.6 billion in the third quarter of 2013. The strongest growth was by rail, with an increase of 9.7 per cent, which means that passenger transport by rail now accounts for more than half of all ticket revenues.

Buses received a 1.2 per cent increase in ticket revenues, in spite of the decrease in passengers. Ticket revenues from boat passengers decreased by -4.5 per cent, which is at odds with the strong passenger growth. The reason for this is a new company that is offering free fares paid by the local authority.
