Steady first half-year

After the record number of passengers in the first quarter of 2014, the following quarter showed a far weaker development. The first half of 2014 showed passenger growth of 8 million in total, compared to the same period of 2013. This was an increase of 2.9 per cent.

Figure 1. Passengers. Preliminary numbers

About 289 million passengers used public transport in the first half of 2013, and barely 173 million of these went by bus, while 112 million were transported on rails and 4.5 million by boat. The strongest growth was however by bus and on rails , increasing by 10.9 and 4.9 per cent respectively compared to the same period in 2013.

Struggling buses

Scheduled buses drove nearly 1.9 million kilometres more in the first half of 2014 compared to the same period in 2013, however this mode of transportation had the weakest progress, with only 1.5 per cent passenger growth. Passenger boats drove, by comparison, 4.0 per cent less than the first half of 2013, and rail transport travelled almost as far as before, while passenger numbers, as mentioned above, had a much stronger development.

Increased ticket revenues

Ticket revenues increased overall by 6.2 per cent; a clearly stronger growth than passenger growth, and totalled NOK 5.7 billion in the first half of 2014. More than half of this sum related to fares for transport on rails.

Weak second quarter

The second quarter in 2014 had a 1.0 per cent decrease in passengers and a 2.0 per cent decrease in distance driven compared to the second quarter in 2013. The entire decrease was by bus, which transported 2.1 million fewer passengers, but also transport on rails, which had weaker growth than the trend from recent quarters.

Easter affects quarterly comparisons

Easter was in the first quarter in 2013 and in the second quarter in 2014. There is no school transport during school holidays and fewer commuter fares, and this reduction is not offset by holiday fares. It is mainly buses, light rails, trams and the underground that suffer during holiday periods. When comparing second quarters in 2013 and 2014, the growth will be a bit underestimated.
