Decrease in tonnage

The total tonnage carried decreased by 8 per cent in the first quarter 2001, compared with the same quarter the previous year. The average length of carriage per ton increased, but there was still a slight decrease in transport performance since the first quarter 2000.

During the first quarter 2001 Norwegian lorries carried 46.3 million tons of goods. Transport for hire or reward represented 68 per cent of the total tonnage carried in the first quarter 2001. In 2000 the corresponding share was 66 per cent. The transport of agricultural products, fertilisers, coal, coke, oil and chemical products decreased by about 45 per cent, while the transport of food products and animal food increased by 8.2 per cent since the corresponding quarter last year.

The domestic transport performance carried out by Norwegian lorries with a carrying capacity of 3.5 tons or more constituted 2.9 billion ton-kilometres in the first quarter of 2001. Transport for hire or reward represented 84.5 per cent of the total transport performance in the first quarter 2001, a reduction of 2.5 percentage points since the first quarter 2000.

The total utilisation of capacity increased by two percentage points from the first quarter 2000 and is now 47.2 per cent. Trips carrying cargo showed an increase in the utilisation of capacity by 2.8 percentage points and the lorries are now utilising 63.3 per cent of the total capacity.

Longer trips

The total number of vehicle-kilometres performed in the first quarter of 2001 was 311.6 million kilometres. This is 3.6 per cent less than the corresponding quarter the previous year. The share of kilometres driven with cargo has stayed at 74 per cent since the first quarter of the previous year. The average length of trips per ton increased from 58.4 kilometres in the first quarter 2000 to 63.1 kilometres in the first quarter 2001.
