Increased national activity for lorries
Lorries registered in Norway transported 4.2 billion tonne-kilometres in Norway and abroad in the first quarter of 2004. 51.5 million tonnes of goods were transported. The activity in Norway increased compared with the first quarter of 2003 while a slight decline were recorded in the international activity for the same period.
Lorries registered in Norway transported 50.5 million tonnes of goods in Norway in the first quarter of 2004, while 1.01 million tonnes of goods were transported abroad. 994 800 tonnes were transported to/from Norway leaving 21 100 tonnes to be transported within a different country than Norway (cabotage) and between two foreign countries (cross-trade) with Norwegian lorries.
Positive national trend
Norwegian lorries carried out 3.5 billion tonne-kilometres in the first quarter of 2004. This represents a 7.7 per cent increase compared with the corresponding period in 2003. The transport performance for public haulage increased by 8.1 per cent in the same period.
Evident international decline
Tonnes transported abroad with Norwegian lorries amounted to 1.01 million tonnes in the fist quarter of 2004. This is a decline of 10.3 per cent from the first quarter of 2003. Goods transported to Norway from abroad have decreased the most with a decrease of 13.2 per cent. This is especially due to less transported volume from Sweden.
The Danes are coming
Figures from Statistics Denmark show that Danish registered lorries increased their activity to/from Norway by 17 per cent from the first quarter 2003 to the first quarter 2004 measured in tonnes transported.
Figures from Statistics Sweden show a different feature. Tonnes of goods transported to/from Norway with Swedish registered lorries dropped by 8.7 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2003. Tonnes transported to Norway fell by 18.8 per cent while transport from Norway to Sweden increased by 10.8 per cent when comparing figures from the first quarters of 2004 and 2003.
Figures from Statistics Finland show that Finnish registered lorries transported more than twice as many tonnes of goods to Norway from Finland than tonnes transported in the opposite direction.
