More goods on Norwegian roads
The amount of goods carried by Norwegian lorries during the second quarter of 2004 was the largest since the turn of the millennium. Norwegian lorries' international transport of goods was the lowest since the survey was altered in 2003.
The lorry survey shows that Norwegian lorries transported 61.4 million tonnes of goods nationally during the second quarter of 2004. This is an increase of 2 per cent from the same period in 2003. The total amount of goods transported in the first six months increased by 4 per cent from the previous year.
The domestic transport performance amounted to 3.5 billion tonne-kilometres. This is 9 per cent less than in the second quarter of 2003. Compared with the same period of 2003 the transport performance has shown a slight decrease.
Shorter national trips
The average length of haul per tonne dropped from 63.0 kilometres in the second quarter of 2003 to 56.4 kilometres in the same period of 2004. This is due to an increase in the number of short trips, like the transport of soil and gravel. This is also a part of the explanation for the decrease in the transport performance despite the increase in the amount of goods transported.
Less goods carried to and from abroad
Norwegian lorries carried almost one million tonnes of goods on foreign roads during the second quarter of 2004. This is 11 per cent less than in the same quarter of 2003. Transport performance on international trips was 750 million tonne-kilometres, 10 per cent below the level seen in the same quarter the previous year.
More empty kilometres nationally - less internationally
In the second quarter of 2004 the rate of empty kilometres was 27.8 per cent on national trips. This is 1.5 percentage points higher than in the same quarter of 2003. On international trips the corresponding rate was 11.6 per cent, a decrease of 1.8 percentage points from the same period in 2003.
More international haulage for Denmark
During the first half of 2004 Danish lorries carried 8.6 million tonnes of goods internationally. This is a 12 per cent increase from the same period the previous year. For Norwegian and Swedish lorries the picture was different, with a decrease of 11 and 16 per cent respectively. The amount of goods transported by Finnish lorries abroad was unchanged in this period.
