Less empty running internationally
Both goods transported and kilometres driven by Norwegian lorries nationally were higher in 2004 than in the previous year. This resulted in an increase in the transport performance in this period. On international trips the rate of empty kilometres was 12.8 per cent in 2004 - 2.4 percentage points less than in 2003
The transport performance in 2004 amounted to 14458.2 million tonne-kilometres. This is 6.2 per cent more than in 2003. The amount of goods transported in Norway increased by 6 per cent from the previous year, and amounted to 240,4 million tonnes in 2004.
More goods
In 2004 128.3 million tonnes of gravel, sand etc. were transported on Norwegian roads. This is an increase of 7.4 per cent from the previous year, and constituted 54 per cent of the total amount of goods transported. Because these commodities are normally transported over a shorter distance, the corresponding increase in the transport performance was only 3.4 per cent. The transport of general goods, metal products etc. increased by 11.7 per cent in this period, and constituted 21 per cent of the total amount of goods carried in 2004.
Less empty running internationally
In 2004 the rate of empty kilometres was 26.8 per cent. This is an increase of 0.5 percentage points from 2003. On international trips the rate was 12.8 per cent in 2004. This is 2.4 percentage points less than in the previous year.
International transport down
In 2004 Norwegian lorries transported just over 4 million tonnes of goods on roads abroad - a decrease of 10.7 per cent from the previous year. The transport performance carried out abroad went down by 2 per cent in the same period, and accounted to 3006.4 million tonne-kilometres in 2004. Each tonne carried on Norwegian lorries was transported 740 kilometres on average in 2004.
Main figures for the fourth quarter of 2004
During the fourth quarter 60.9 million tonnes of goods were transported nationally on Norwegian lorries. This is the same amount as in the same period in 2003. The transport performance on the other hand increased by 15.2 per cent and accounted to 3 956 million tonne-kilometres in the fourth quarter of 2004.
The transport performance carried out abroad amounted to 782.9 million tonne-kilometres, a slight increase from the fourth quarter of 2003. Norwegian lorries transported just over 1 million tonnes of goods to or from Norway during this quarter, which was a decrease of 13.2 per cent.
