More transport for own account
Norwegian lorries transported 2 million tonnes more goods during the 4th quarter of 2010 than in the corresponding quarter in 2009. The transport performance was up 345 million tonne kilometres. The increase was mainly due to growth in transport for own account.
A total of 68.5 million tonnes of goods were transported by Norwegian lorries during the 4th quarter of 2010. Of this, 33.4 million tonnes were transported for own account, i.e. by enterprises transporting their own goods. This is 6.7 million tonnes, or 25.1 per cent, more than in the same quarter in the previous year.
Transport performance is a term covering both transport distance and tonnage carried. The transport performance by Norwegian lorries in the 4th quarter of 2010 was 5.3 billion tonne kilometres. Of this, 1.3 billion tonne kilometres were for own account and this is 303.5 million, or 31.5 per cent, more than in the 4th quarter of 2009.
More transport abroad
The Norwegian lorries transported 67 million tonnes of goods inside Norway and 1.5 million tonnes abroad in the 4th quarter of 2010. The tonnage carried domestically has grown by 2.9 per cent, while the tonnage carried internationally has grown by 5.7 per cent compared with the corresponding quarter in the previous year. The international transport is mainly performed for hire or reward, i.e. by enterprises undertaking carriage of goods on behalf of third parties.
Almost half of the domestic transport for own account
The ratio between transport for own account and transport for hire or reward has varied over time. In 2000, less than 30 per cent of the goods were transported for own account, while the share was more than 45 per cent in 2010. For transport performance the variation is more modest. The long distance transports are principally performed for hire or reward, and the share of transport for own account is consequently smaller than for tonnage carried. A quarter of the transport performance was for own account in 2010 compared with 15 per cent in 2000.
Increase in 2010
In total, 266.8 million tonnes of goods were transported by Norwegian lorries during the year 2010. This is 3.6 per cent more than in 2009. The tonnage carried in 2010 was nevertheless 7.8 per cent lower than in 2008.
The transport performance was also up from 2009 to 2010, but this too was lower than in 2008. A total of 19.7 billion tonne kilometres was the result for the Norwegian lorries in 2010. This is 7.1 per cent more than in 2009 and 4.6 per cent less than in 2008.
