A total 271.3 million tonnes of goods transported Norwegian lorries in Norway and abroad and transport performance of 21.3 billion tonne kilometres. This represented a growth of transport volume and transport performance respectively 7.8 and 5.7 per cent from 2012. The average mileage per tonne decreased from 80.2 in 2012 to 78.5 kilometres per tonne in 2013.

Increase in international transport

Norwegian lorries transported 6.5 million tonnes of goods abroad in 2013. There corresponds to an increase by 6.2 per cent compared with 2012. The transport performance decreased by 6.4 per cent, mostly because the goods were transported shorter. The average mileage decreased from 600.0 kilometres per tonne in 2012 to 528.4 kilometres per tonne in 2013.

Less own transport

The ratio between transport for own account and transport for hire or reward varied over time. In 2003, 39.1 per cent of the goods transported as own transport, while the percentage was 34.4 in 2013. The transport performance was not as much variety. The share of own transport measured in tonne kilometres of 21.7 per cent in 2013.

Less empty driving

The share of kilometres driven unloaded were driving in Norway was 25.2 per cent in 2013, compared to 26.4 the year before. In all of 133.0 million kilometres driven Norwegian lorries without a load

in 2013. The international driving there was a small increase in empty transport. In assessing the rate of empty kilometres, it is important to take into account that for a large share of goods domestically is non-natural to return load, for example, the transport of gravel, sand, waste and building materials, etc…

Reduced road goods transport in the other Nordic countries

While transport by lorries increased in Norway from 2012 to 2013, it went down in the other Nordic countries. In both Sweden and Finland, has been a significant reduction in tonnes transported in recent years. From 2012 to 2013, the fall was respectively 4.7 and 8.7 per cent. Since 2009, the tonnage carried by Swedish registered lorries in Sweden decreased by 16.0 per cent. For Denmark it is only a slight decline over the last few years.

The picture is a little different measured of tonne kilometres. In Sweden, for example, a slight increase in the domestic transport performance, despite the significant decline in tonnage carried. Consequently, the average mileage per tonne increased.

Increase in transport performance in 4th quarter

The transport performance by Norwegian lorries of 5.8 billion tonne kilometres in national and international transport in 4th quarter 2013. This is 7.7 per cent more than in the same quarter in 2012. The tonnage carried went up by 10.4 per cent.
