Stable growth in national transport performance
In total, the transport performance of Norwegian lorries was nearly 5.5 billion tonne kilometres in the 2nd quarter of 2014. Of this, 4.8 billion tonne kilometres were domestic trips and 0.7 billion tonne kilometres were foreign trips.

The domestic transport performance increased by 2.0 per cent compared to the 2nd quarter of 2013, while foreign trips in the same period saw a decline of 7.7 per cent. In total, Norwegian lorries transported 77.9 million tonnes of goods domestically and 1.3 million tonnes abroad in the 2nd quarter 2014. This means that the transport rate increased by 17.1 per cent domestically compared with the corresponding quarter in 2013, while remaining unchanged for international transport.
Mass transport dominates in tonnes
The transport of bulk products, such as gravel, sand, cement, soil, stone etc. which dominates the domestic transport, is measured in tonnes. Mass transport amounted to 50.5 million tonnes in the 2nd quarter of 2014, and represented 65 per cent of the total amount transported domestically. General goods, metal products, manufactured goods, crude industrial products etc. constituted 12 million tonnes, while foodstuffs and animal foods amounted to 6 million tonnes, representing a share of 15 and 8 per cent respectively.
Three equally sized groups measured in tonne kilometres
The picture is slightly different when we take into account how far the goods are transported. Gravel transport is short and therefore makes up a significantly lower proportion of the tonne kilometres. The proportion was 29 per cent in the 2nd quarter of this year. However, the transport of foodstuffs and manufactured goods, and cargo was roughly equal, with a share of tonne kilometres production of 23 and 28 per cent respectively.
Reduced average mileage per tonne
The average mileage per tonne for national transport decreased from 71.0 to 61.8 kilometres compared to the 2nd quarter of 2013, while for the international transport it went down from 566.4 to 511.0 kilometres per tonne.
Increased proportion of own account
Transport for own account carried a total 35.4 million tonnes of goods in the 2nd quarter of 2014. This accounted for 44.8 per cent of the total tonnage. The share for transport performance for transport for own account was 23.9 per cent. This is 4.1 percentage points more than in the same period in 2013.
The statistics is now published as Carriage of goods by lorry.
