Norwegian lorries transported 78.9 million tonnes domestically, while the foreign transport was a modest 1.2 million tonnes in the 2nd quarter of 2015.

140 million kilometres without a load

Norwegian lorries drove a total of 550 million kilometres on their trips with and without a load in the 2nd quarter of 2015. This is 3.3 per cent less than in the same period in 2014. A total of 140 million kilometres were driven without a load. This gives a share of kilometres driven without a load of 25.5 per cent; 1.8 percentage points less compared to the 2nd quarter last year. When the share of kilometres of empty driving is assessed, it must be considered that a significant amount of the transport domestically consists of commodities for which a return load is not common, such as the mass transport and timber transport.

Increase for international transport performance

The increase in the total transport performance was 5.2 per cent from the 2nd quarter of 2014 to the 2nd quarter of 2015. The tonnage carried, related to exports and imports, amounted 0.8 billion tonne kilometres; an increase of 16.8 per cent in the same period. The domestic transport performance increased 3.7 per cent compared with the corresponding quarter in 2014 and amounted to 5.0 billion tonne kilometres.

Transport for hire or reward carrying most

Transport for hire or reward carried a total of 62.1 per cent of the volume of goods, and accounted for 69.3 per cent of total mileage and 77.9 per cent of the transport performance in the 2nd quarter this year. While the share of kilometres with no load was 24.1 per cent of transport for hire or reward, the corresponding figure for transport for own account was 28.7 per cent.

Increased average mileage per tonne

The average mileage per tonne for national transport increased from 61.8 to 63.2 kilometres compared to the 2nd quarter of 2014.
