Decrease in lorry transport
Domestic transport by lorry went down in the 1st quarter of 2016 compared to the same quarter last year. Lorries transported 59.1 million tonnes of freight during trips in Norway. This is 6.8 per cent less than in the 1st quarter of 2015.

Domestic transport performance amounted to 4.6 billion tonne-kilometres; 9 per cent less than in the 1st quarter of 2015. The timing of Easter may have contributed to this decline since the entire Easter holiday this year was in March, while Easter last year was in April.
Norwegian lorries transported 1.2 million tonnes of goods abroad and performed a total of 0.4 billion tonne-kilometres. This is almost 0.2 billion tonne-kilometres less compared to the same quarter in 2015.
Mass transport driving mostly local
Mass transport accounted for 61.6 per cent of the total domestic transport in the 1st quarter of 2016, and 26.3 per cent of the total transport performance. The market share of transport performance is significantly lower than when measured in tonnes, because mass transport is usually performed over short distances. The transport performance of manufactured goods dominates since these goods are transported farther, but represented only 14.2 per cent of the total transported amount.
Almost one out of three lorries driven without a load
The total vehicle-kilometres driven in Norway were 449.6 million kilometres in the 1st quarter of 2016. Correspondingly, Norwegian lorries drove 31.1 million kilometres in connection with trips abroad. About one-third of the distance driven in Norway was driven without a load. The rate of empty kilometres was 3.0 percentage points less in the 1st quarter of 2015. For transport for hire or reward, the rate of empty kilometres was less than for transport driven for own transport, 26.6 per cent compared to 31.8 per cent.
New method of the 3rd quarter 2015 can affect comparabilityOpen and readClose
As of the 3rd quarter of 2015, the road goods transport survey has seen a few changes in the statistical methods used. As a consequence, the results for international transport are not directly comparable to earlier figures, but the main outlines of the transport performances can still be followed back to the survey's origin in 1963.
Conversion to a new electronic form from the 1st quarter of 2016Open and readClose
As of the 1st quarter of 2016, the road goods transport survey has changed significantly, and is now only conducted electronically via Altinn. The changes can to some extent affect comparability between some variables such as commodity distribution, distribution between transport for hire or reward and transport for own account and share of empty driving.
The statistics is now published as Carriage of goods by lorry.
