Of the 50 000 port calls, about 34 700 were in Europe and 10 200 in Norway. In other words: one out of five port calls made by Norway’s foreign fleet were in Norway.

Of this traffic, we find 818 vessels with 16.3 million worth of gross tonnage; about the same as the year before. We also find the same flags as previous years, with half of the vessels registered in the Bahamas, Singapore, Malta, and the Marshall Islands. The Bahamas is the most used flag state, with 157 Norwegian-controlled vessels at 3.1 million gross tonnes in 2014.

Fewer port calls in Norway

In 2013, Norwegian-controlled vessels registered abroad made 11 500 port calls in Norway. In 2014, this figure dropped by 11 per cent to 10 200. Arrived gross tonnage fell even more, by almost 16 per cent, ending at 75.5 million tonnes. Every ship category experienced reduced port calls but tankers and general cargo, with the most port calls, fell by a total of 1 100. Traffic was not replaced by Norwegian-registered vessels. Port calls in Norway by ships in Norwegian registers increased by 760, or 3 per cent, ending up at 26 500.

Norwegian-registered ships increasing their port calls globally

With the exception of general cargo ships and Oceania, vessels in NOR and NIS made more port calls in 2014 than the year before across all continents. In South America, port calls by Norwegian-registered ships increased by 16 per cent, closing at 2 400 for the year 2014. Vessels registered in Norway operate mostly in Europe however. While these vessels made 52 700 port calls globally in 2014, the corresponding figure for Europe was 40 200.

The fleet statistics accompanying this traffic were similar to the year before, with 940 vessels and 15.4 million worth of gross tonnage.
