Sales total NOK 34.8 billion
Hotel and restaurant enterprises rang up a total of NOK 34.8 billion in sales 1998 and employed 81 000 persons. The industry paid out NOK 11.4 billion in wages and social costs and made gross investments of NOK 3.1 billion.
Standard Industrial Classification Group 55.3, Restaurants, was the largest in terms of sales, accounting for more than NOK 14.6 billion in 1998. Employment was nearly 39 000, the largest in the hotel and restaurant sector. Wage costs were NOK 4.5 billion, while gross investments were NOK 1.2 billion.
Hotels
The second largest group, Standard Industrial Classification Group 55.1, Hotels, posted sales of just under NOK 14.6 billion in 1998. The hotels had nearly 29 000 employees and wage costs of NOK 4.8 billion. Hotel industry investments totalled around NOK 1.4 billion in 1998.
Canteens and catering
Cantines and catering sales came to NOK 4.0 billion and were the third largest. The enterprises employed nearly 9 000 persons, with wage costs of NOK 1.7 billion and gross investments of NOK 236 million in 1998.
Other accommodation
The second smallest group was Standard Industrial Classification Group 55.2, Camping sites and other provision of short-stay accommodation, with sales of NOK 880 million. Employment was almost <br/>2 500 persons, wage costs NOK 177 million and gross investments around NOK 250 million. A number of small camping sites which neither employ paid labour nor have taxable sales are not included in the statistics.
Bars
The smallest group was Standard Industrial Classification Group 55.4, Bars, which had sales of NOK 679 million in 1998. The bars were also smallest measured in terms of employment, with 2 300 employees. Wage costs were NOK 178 million, while gross investments were NOK 21 million.
