Increased sales

Hotel and restaurant enterprises rang up a total of NOK 36.0 billion in sales 1999 and employed 82 000 persons. The sales increased with 7.3 per cent compared with 1998. The industry paid out NOK 12.4 billion in wages and social costs and made gross investments of NOK 1.6 billion.

The hotel and restaurant establishments sold for 38.2 billion in 1999 and employed 87 000 persons. Wage costs were NOK 13.1 billion, while gross investments were NOK 1.6 billion.

Increased sales for restaurants

Standard Industrial Classification Group 55.3, Restaurants, was the largest in terms of sales. The enterprises accounted for more than NOK 15.6 billion in 1999. In 1998 the sales was NOK 14.5 billion. Employment was over 40 000, wage costs were NOK 4.9 billion, while gross investments were NOK 500 million.

The restaurant establishments sold for 16.9 billion in 1999 and employed 43 000 persons.

.. and for hotels

The second largest group, Standard Industrial Classification Group 55.1, Hotels, posted sales of just under NOK 14.6 billion in 1999. The corresponding figure for 1998 was 13.6 billion. The hotels had nearly 29 000 employees and wage costs of NOK 5.3 billion. Hotel industry investments totalled around NOK 730 million in 1999.

The establishments in the hotel trade had nearly the same sale and employment as the enterprises.
