Increased turnover for hotels and restaurants

The Norwegian hotels and restaurants industry division had a turnover of 39 billion NOK in 2001, according to preliminary figures. This is an increase of 2.1 billion compared with 2000.

The preliminary figures for hotels and restaurants show that turnover increased by 6 per cent compared with the final results for 2000, while employment increased by 3 per cent. However, this increase is partly due to restructurings in the wholesale and retail industry division, where a large number of restaurants and cafés have been separated from the main business activity in the last year. Without these restructurings, the increase in turnover for hotels and restaurants would be about half of what the statistics indicate, while employment would be roughly the same as in 2000.

High employment in restaurants

Norwegian restaurants employed close to 44 100 people and had a turnover of NOK 18.5 billion in 2001, while the hotel enterprises employed just above 27 200 people and had a turnover of NOK 14.7 billion.

Revision of bars

The statistics for the industry group bars show a substantial decline in the number of enterprises, employment and turnover in 2001, compared with 2000. The main reason for this is a revision of industries in the Central Register of Establishments and Enterprises, which have caused several large enterprises to be moved to the industry group restaurants.

Employment in the structural business statistics

The employment figures are compiled according to definitions given by the EU regulation on structural business statistics and is measured as an annual average. Employment is the sum of owners, full-time employees and part-time employees. People with more than one job are counted as an employee in several enterprises.

When making comparisons with other statistics for employment, for instance the labour force survey at Statistics Norway or statistics based on the Register of Employees and Employers, it must be kept in mind that definitions and methodology varies between the statistics.

Preliminary figures

Preliminary figures for turnover and employment on the enterprise level are published for the first time for 2001, in accordance with the EU regulation. The figures are published while data are still being revised and may therefore deviate somewhat from final results published at a later date.

While preliminary figures are published on the enterprise level only, final results are published on both the enterprise level and the local kind-of-activity unit level (see "About the statistics" for a more detailed description).
