Total turnover NOK 41.6 billion
In 2002 there were 11 196 local kind-of-activity units (KAUs) in the hotel and restaurant industry division. They had a total turnover of NOK 41.6 billion. The turnover increased by 4 per cent from NOK 40 billion from 2001.
In the same period the employment increased by about 3 700 people that equals an increase of 4 per cent. The local KAUs paid about NOK 14.2 billion in wages in 2002. Oslo and Hordaland have the highest turnover and the highest number of employees compared with other counties. In these counties the local KAUs had a turnover of almost NOK 13 billion and they had almost 26 000 employees.
Restaurants had the highest turnover
At local KAU level the restaurants - i.e. restaurants, cafes, snack bars, and the like - constituted about 47 per cent of the total turnover in the industry division. In 2002 the restaurants had a turnover of almost NOK 19.7 billion. This is an increase of almost 7 per cent compared with 2001. The number of employees has increased correspondingly. Since 2000 the turnover for restaurants has increased by over NOK 2 billion.
Increase for camping sites
The camping sites have had a strong increase in turnover the last two years. At local KAU level they had a turnover of NOK 733 million. It has increased by NOK 48 million since 2001. Compared with 2000 the turnover has increased by another NOK 51 million.
Increase in value added
The growth in turnover for the local KAUs in the hotel and restaurant industry is also noticeable as an increase in the total value added at factor cost. The total value added at factor cost grew by over NOK 1 billion in 2002. The reason for the increase of the total value added at factor cost is that the operating income grew more rapidly than the operating costs.
The enterprises in the industry division
The figures for the enterprises show a total turnover of 40.5 billion in 2002. This is an increase of 2 billion. Number of employees has grown to almost 87 000.
Increase in number of enterprises
There has been a comparatively strong increase in number of enterprises last year. It is to a large extent due to better register information as a result of value added tax (VAT) reform and enterprises with low turnover - that were previously not included - are included in 2002.
Local KAUs and enterprises
The figures on the enterprises level may differ from those on local KAU level. This is due to some enterprises being registered after main activity in one industry subclass, but may also consist of local KAUs in other subgroups.
