29 killed in October

According to the preliminary figures for October, 29 persons were killed and 885 persons were injured in road traffic accidents. Of the fatalities last month sixteen were drivers of automobile, six passengers of automobile, one motorcyclist, one mopedallist, one cyclist and four pedestrians.

Most of the victims in road traffic accidents were young people between 15 and 24 years of age and the age group of 25-64, with eleven and ten fatalities. One child under seven years of age and seven persons over the age of 64 lost their lives last month.

According to the preliminary figures for October 1999, 24 persons were killed and 917 injured. The average number of this month in the five-year period 1995-1999 shows 30 fatalities and 943 injured.

According to preliminary figures so far this year 286 persons have lost their lives and 9 257 were injured in road traffic accidents. The corresponding preliminary figures for the same period last year were 248 killed and 9 185 injured.

The accident statistics for 1999, which are used for comparative purposes, are preliminary figures published in the Weekly Bulletin of Statistics, Road Traffic Accidents Involving Personal Injury, October 1999. The figures for 1999 presented in tables 1-5 are final. The statistics cover only accidents reported to the police. Consequently, minor accidents and injuries in particular are underrepresented in the injury statistics.
