According to preliminary figures 339 persons lost their lives and 11 339 were injured in road traffic accidents in 2000. This is 35 more fatalities and 137 more injured persons than in 1999.

Of the fatalities in 2000 141 were drivers of automobile, 83 passengers of automobile, 40 motorcyclists, six mopedallists, 13 cyclists, 46 pedestrians, two persons were sledging or skiing and eight other road-users.

Less elderly people killed

20 children under the age of 15 lost their lives in traffic accidents in 2000. The corresponding figures for 1999 was 19 children. Of these 20 children killed last year nine were passengers of automobile, three cyclists, four were pedestrians, two were sledging or skiing and two other road-users.

The number of persons killed in the age group 25-64 increased from 142 in 1999 to 168 in 2000. 89 young people between 15 and 24 years of age lost their lives in 2000. The corresponding figure for 1999 was 77. 62 persons over the age of 64 were killed, compared with 66 in 1999.

The number of accidents in 2000 fell the most in Vest-Agder, Hordaland and Telemark counties, with respectively 68, 59 and 41 fewer accidents compared with 1999. Sør-Trøndelag, Østfold and Oslo counties increased the most with respectively 46, 44 and 23 more accidents.

According to the first overview for December 24 persons were killed and 916 persons were injured, compared with 28 killed and 895 injured in 1999. The average figures in the five-year period 1995-1999 shows 25 killed and 831 injured in December.

The accident statistics for 1999, which are used for comparative purposes, are preliminary figures published in the Today's Statistics, Road Traffic Accidents Involving Personal Injury, December 1999. The figures for 1999 presented in tables 1-5 are final. The statistics cover only accidents reported to the police. Consequently, minor accidents and injuries in particular are underrepresented in the injury statistics.
