28 killed in January

According to the first overview for January, 28 persons were killed and 716 persons were injured. Of the fatalities last month 17 were drivers of automobile, two passengers of automobile and nine pedestrians.

The first overview for January 2000 showed the same number of persons killed, while 762 were injured. The average number of persons killed an injured for January in the five-year period 1996-2000 was 20 and 746, respectively.

One of the victims in road traffic accidents in January were under 6 years of age, four was between 15 and 24 years, 19 were in the age group 25-64 while four were over 64 years of age.

The last revised numbers shows that 340 persons have lost their lives and 11 463 were injured in 2000.

The accident statistics for 2000, which are used for comparative purposes, are preliminary figures published in the Weekly Bulletin of Statistics, Road Traffic Accidents Involving Personal Injury, January 2000. The figures for 2000 presented in tables 1-5 are the last revised. The statistics cover only accidents reported to the police. Consequently, minor accidents and injuries in particular are underrepresented in the injury statistics.
