Fewer children killed in road traffic accidents

According to the first overview 30 persons were killed and 1 062 persons injured in traffic accidents in August 2001. Five children under the age of 15 have lost their lives so far this year. This is 13 fewer than last year.

The average figures for 1996-2000 for children under 15 show 14 killed. Also the number of injured children fell compared with last year.

The statistics cover only accidents reported to the police. Consequently, minor accidents and injuries in particular are underrepresented in the injury statistics.

 Persons killed. January-August. 1996-2001

The first overview for August last year showed 31 persons killed, while 902 were injured. The average figures for August 1996-2000 show 31 and 969, respectively.

Ten of the fatalities last month were drivers of automobile, six passengers, seven persons on motorcycle, two persons on moped, one person on cycle, three pedestrians and one person on tractor.

Of the 30 fatalities last month two children were under 15 years of age, seven persons were between 15 and 24 year of age, 13 were in the age group 25-64 and eight persons were older than 64.

199 persons lost their lives since 1 January

According to preliminary figures 199 persons were killed and 7 164 were injured so far this year. The corresponding preliminary figures for the same period last year were 215 and 7 247.

93 of the victims in road traffic accidents this year were drivers of automobile. Eight of these were under 20 year of age, 18 were in the age group 20-24, 26 were between 25-39 year of age, 24 were in the age group 40-60 and 17 were older than 60.

The number of motorcyclists killed fell from 31 last year to 27 this year. However the number of injured motorcyclists increased from 460 in 2000 to 539 in 2001.

The accident statistics for 2000, which are used for comparative purposes, are preliminary figures. Figures for 2000 presented in the tables 1-5 are final.
