Fewer killed in road traffic accidents
The first overview shows that 220 persons were killed in road traffic accidents in the first nine months of 2001. This is 42 fewer than in the same period last year. In comparison, an average of 234 persons were killed in road traffic accidents in the first nine months of the period 1996-2000.
21 persons were killed in road traffic accidents in September, while 974 were injured. The first overview for September 2000 showed that 42 persons were killed, while 922 were injured. In comparison, the average figures for the period 1996-2000 are 33 and 902, respectively.
The preliminary figures of the Nordic statistics for the first half of 2001 show that Denmark, Finland and Sweden experienced a total of 195, 196 and 245 fatalities in road traffic accidents, respectively. Correspondingly, the total for Norway were 138 persons killed in road traffic accidents in the first six months of 2001.
Eleven of the 21 fatalities on Norwegian roads last month were drivers of automobiles, five were passengers of automobiles, one was a motorcyclist, two were mopedists, one a cyclist and one a pedestrian.
So far this year, 105 of the fatalities in road traffic accidents have been drivers of automobiles, while 49 have been passengers of automobiles. This is 19 fewer passengers killed than in the same period last year, but about the same number of drivers.
The number of motorcyclists killed in the first nine months fell from 36 last year to 28 this year. The number of cyclists killed has also dropped from 12 in 2000 to four in 2001.
The preliminary figures show that 8 269 have been injured on Norwegian roads so far this year. The preliminary figures for 2001 showed that 8 278 persons were injured between January and September, while the corresponding average for the period 1996-2000 were 8 338.
The counties of Østfold, Rogaland and Møre og Romsdal have experienced the largest drop in road traffic fatalities so far this year, with respectively 70, 69 and 58 fewer accidents than in the same period last year. The figures for Hordaland, Akershus and Oslo have increased the most between 2000 and 2001, with 83, 68 and 56 more accidents in the first nine months, respectively.
The accident statistics for 2000, which are used for comparative purposes, are preliminary figures. Figures for 2000 presented in the tables 1-5 are final.
