Numbers of fatalities increased in January
In January 2002 there were 35 fatal accidents on Norway's roads, and 836 people were injured. The fatalities involved 19 car drivers, nine car passengers, six pedestrians and one motorcyclist.
The preliminary figures for January 2002 show 35 fatalities. This is the highest number of people killed in road traffic accidents in Norway since 1988. The average number of fatalities in January from 1993 to 2002 was 23 people.
Among the 35 fatalities in January 2002, six people were between 13 and 24 years old, 11 were between 25 and 39 years old, nine were in the age group 40-59, and nine people were over 60 years old.
In January 2002 there were 577 road traffic accidents recorded by the police in Norway, and these accidents resulted in 836 injuries. Among these injuries 8.9 per cent or 74 people were very seriously or seriously injured and 76.9 per cent or 643 people were slightly injured. The remaining injuries were unspecified.
The updated figures for 2001 show that 276 people were killed and 11 471 people were injured in road traffic accidents in Norway.
In 2001 there were 425 people killed in road traffic accidents in Denmark and Finland, and 541 people in Sweden.
The accident statistics for 2001 that is used for comparative purposes, are preliminary figures. Figures for 2001 presented in the tables 1-9 are the last revised.
