Many injuries in the first quarter

A total of 65 persons were killed and 2 572 persons injured in road traffic accidents on Norwegian roads in the first quarter 2002, according to preliminary figures. This is the highest number of injuries in the 1s t quarter since 1995.

Comparative figures for the 1s t quarter of 2001 was 63 casualties and 2 293 injuries, while the average for the period 1993-2002 is 63 casualties and 2 366 injuries.

More passengers killed

18 passengers of automobiles were killed in the 1s t quarter of 2002, six more than in the corresponding period last year. Among the 18 casualties, two were children under the age of six, three persons were between 13 and 17 years old, three between 20 and 24 years old, seven between 25 and 59, and three persons were more than 70 years old.

The average figure for the period 1993-2002 is 16 passengers of automobiles killed in the 1s t quarter.

Fewer casualties in March

12 persons were killed in road accidents last month, the lowest number for March in the period 1993-2002. Five of the casualties were in the age group 16-23, six persons were between 31 and 57 years old, and one person was more than 80 years old.

The average figure for March in the period 1993-2002 is 20 casualties.

Norwegian police authorities registered 513 road traffic accidents involving personal injury in March 2002, with a total of 790 injuries. In these accidents, a total of 67 persons were dangerously or seriously injured, while 616 persons were slightly injured. In the remaining cases, the degree of injury was not stated.

The revised figures for 2001 show that 276 persons were killed and 11 523 injured on Norwegian roads last year.

Nordic figures

In the first two months of 2002 80 persons were killed in road traffic accidents in Sweden, 72 persons were killed in Denmark and 59 persons in Finland. The comparative figure for Norway was 53 casualties. Comparative figures for January and February last year was 62, 75, 65 and 45 killed respectively.

The accident statistics for 2001 that is used for comparative purposes are preliminary figures. Figures for 2001 presented in the tables 1-10 are the last revised.
