73 killed in the first four months of 2003

A total of 73 persons were killed and 3 101 were injured on Norwegian roads from January to April 2003, according to preliminary figures. The number of persons killed is lower than the comparative average for the period 1994-2003, while the number of persons injured is somewhat higher.

Comparative figures for the first four months of 2002 were 87 persons killed and 3 381 persons injured, while the averages for the period 1994-2003 are 81 persons killed and 3075 injured.

High number of serious injuries

Of the 3 101 persons who were injured in the first four months of 2003, 285 persons - or 9.2 per cent -were seriously or dangerously injured. 2 548 persons - or 82.2 per cent - were slightly injured. The remaining injuries were unspecified.

More children killed

So far this year, five children under the age of 12 have lost their lives on Norwegian roads, while 203 have been injured. Comparative figures show that three children were killed and 207 injured in the first four months of 2002.

Accidents involving lorries

So far in 2003, eight persons have been killed and 94 persons have been injured in accidents involving heavy vehicles. Comparative figures for 2002 were 12 persons killed and 142 injured.

More persons killed in April

A total of 518 road traffic accidents were reported to Norwegian police in April 2003. 25 persons were killed in these accidents, while 745 persons were injured. Comparative preliminary figures for April last year were 17 persons killed and 769 injured. The average figures for the period 1994-2003 are 20 persons killed and 642 injured.

Of the 25 persons killed in road traffic accidents last month, 13 were drivers of automobiles, five were passengers of automobiles, three were motorcyclists, two were pedestrians and two were classified as other type of road user.

The latest revised figures for the whole of 2002 show that 310 persons were killed and 12 280 persons were injured on Norwegian roads last year.

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures.

The accident statistics for 2002 that are used for comparative purposes are preliminary figures. Figures for 2002 presented in the tables 1-10 are preliminary.
