21 killed and 1,039 injured in September

A total of 737 road traffic accidents were reported to the Norwegian police in September. 21 people lost their lives and 1,039 were injured in these accidents, according to preliminary figures.

Comparative figures for September last year show that 26 people were killed and 1,071 injured on Norwegian roads, while the average figures for the ten-year period 1994-2003 are 27 fatalities and 936 injuries in September traffic. Of the 21 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, 13 were drivers of automobiles, three were passengers of automobiles, two were motorcyclists, two were mopedallists and one was a pedestrian.

Fewer killed so far this year

The preliminary figures show that 200 people have lost their lives and 8,498 have been injured on Norwegian roads so far this year. The comparative figures for last year were 232 people killed and 9,314 injured, while the average figures for the period 1994-2003 are 225 people killed and 8,393 injured in the first nine months of the year.

Decrease in number of young drivers killed

18 drivers of automobiles in the age group 18-24 years have lost their lives on Norwegian roads so far this year, which is 12 fewer than in the same period of 2002 and nine fewer than the average figure for the first nine months of the five-year period 1999-2003.

Police figures

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures.

The injury figures for 2002 that are used for comparative purposes in this text are preliminary. The figures for 2002 presented in the tables 1-8 are final.
