17 children killed in traffic so far

17 children below the age of 13 have been killed on Norwegian roads so far in 2003, according to preliminary figures. This is 12 more than in 2002 and five more than the average figure for the period 1999-2003.

Seven of the 17 children who have been killed in 2003 were passengers of automobiles, one was a cyclist and nine were pedestrians. Comparative figures for the period from January to November last year were two passengers of automobiles, two pedestrians and one sledger.

More people killed in November traffic

A total of 585 road traffic accidents were reported to Norwegian police in November. 27 people lost their lives and 838 were injured in these accidents, according to preliminary figures. The figures for November last year show that 19 people were killed and 800 injured on Norwegian roads. The average figures for the ten-year period 1994-2003 are 25 fatalities and 802 injuries in November traffic. Of the 27 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, 16 were drivers of automobiles, eight were passengers of automobiles, one was a cyclist and two were pedestrians.

Fewer killed so far

The preliminary figures show that 251 people have lost their lives and 10 447 have been injured on Norwegian roads so far this year. The comparative figures for last year were 281 people killed and 11 595 injured. The average figures for the period 1994-2003 are 276 people killed and 10 483 injured in the first eleven months of the year.

Police figures

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures.

The preliminary injury figures for November 2003 that are used for comparative purposes in this text and figures presented in the tables 1-5 and 7-9 are compared with final figures for the same period in 2002.
