27 killed and 961 injured in December

A total of 640 road traffic accidents were reported to the Norwegian police in December. 27 people lost their lives and 961 were injured in these accidents, according to preliminary figures.

Comparative figures for December 2002 show that 29 people were killed and 923 injured on Norwegian roads. The average figures for the ten-year period 1994-2003 are 25 fatalities and 878 injuries in the December traffic. Of the 27 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, 11 were drivers of cars, seven were passengers of cars, two were mopedallists and seven were pedestrians.

Fewer killed in 2003

The preliminary figures show that 275 people have lost their lives and 11 489 have been injured on Norwegian roads in 2003. The figures for 2002 were 310 people killed and 12 395 injured, while the average figures for the period 1994-2003 are 300 people killed and 11 488 injured.

Decrease in number of drivers and passengers of cars killed

132 drivers and 57 passengers of cars have lost their lives on Norwegian roads in 2003, which is 11 and 15 fewer than in 2002, and six and 12 fewer than the average figure for the five-year period 1999-2003.

Police figures

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures.

The preliminary injury figures for December 2003 that are used for comparative purposes in this text and figures presented in the tables 1-5 and 7-9 are compared with final figures for the same period in 2002.
