21 killed and 812 injured in February

A total of 521 road traffic accidents were reported to Norwegian police in February. 21 people lost their lives and 812 were injured in these accidents, according to preliminary figures.

Comparative figures for February 2003 show that 16 people were killed and 731were injured, while the average figures for the ten-year period 1995-2004 are 20 fatalities and 747 injuries in February traffic. Of the 21 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, ten were drivers of automobiles, eight were passengers of automobiles, one person of mopeds, one pedestrian and one wheelchair user.

More people killed or injured so far this year

The preliminary figures show that 37 persons have been killed and 1 661 persons have been injured so far this year. Comparative figures for January and February last year were 31 killed and 1 502 injured. The average figures for the period 1995-2004 are 42 persons killed and 1 562 injured.

More accidents involving heavy vehicles

The preliminary figures for February 2004 show 24 accidents involving lorries. One person was killed, 38 persons were injured. Comparative figures for February last year show 14 accidents, 16 injured and one killed.

The comparative figures for 2003

The last comparative figures for 2003 show 8 087 accidents, 11 601 injured and 280 persons killed.

Police figures

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures.

The accident figures for 2003 and 2004 that are used for comparative purposes in this text are preliminary.
