22 killed and 761 injured in April
A total of 530 road traffic accidents were reported to the Norwegian police in April, according to the preliminary figures. 22 persons lost their lives, and 761 were injured in these accidents.
Comparative figures for April last year show that 25 persons were killed and 745 injured on Norwegian roads, while the average figures for the period 1995-2004 are 20 fatalities and 667 injuries in April.
Of the 22 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, six were drivers of automobiles, eight were passengers of automobile, five were motorcyclists, two were cyclists and one person classified as other type of road user.
81 killed so far this year
A total of 81 persons have lost their lives on Norwegian roads so far this year. The comparative figure for last year was 74 killed from January to April, while the average figure for the period 1995-2004 is 82 persons killed.
Increase in number of drivers killed in age group 40-59
A total of 37 drivers of automobiles were killed in the first four months of 2004, compared with 35 in the same period last year. The increase was substantial in the age group 40-59 years. So far this year 16 drivers of automobiles in the age group 40-59 years have lost their lives on Norwegian roads, while 12 were killed in the same period last year. Of these 16 drivers 14 lost their lives in head on accidents and two in single vehicle running off the road.
Increase in number of injuries
The preliminary figures show that a total of 3 211 persons have been injured in Norwegian traffic so far in 2004. The comparative figure for 2003 was 3 101persons injured, while the average for the period 1995-2004 is 3 092 persons injured.
Finale figures for 2003
Finale figures for 2003 are 8 266 accidents, 11 851 injured and 280 killed on Norwegian roads. It is 458 fewer accidents, 544 fewer injured and 30 fewer killed than in 2002.
Police figures
The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures. Total injured also include persons with degree of injury unspecified. In the future some of these persons may prove to be uninjured.
The accident figures for 2004 that are used for comparative purposes in this text are preliminary. The figures for 2003 presented in the tables 1-9 are final.
