Fewer killed in summer traffic
A total of 74 people were killed on Norwegian roads from May to August this year. This is the lowest number since the monthly statistics of accidents were first produced in 1968. In August this year, 22 people were killed and 1 012 injured in road traffic accidents, according to preliminary figures.
91 people were killed in the period May to August 2004. A total of 4 520 people were injured in the four summer months of 2005. This compares with 4 387 in 2004. Average figures for the four summer months in the period 2001-2005 show that 100 people have been killed and 4 367 injured.
Decrease in number of motorcyclists killed
The figures show that 15 motorcyclists were killed from May to August this year, compared with 23 in the same period last year. Six pedestrians were killed, the same as last year. There was also a decrease in the number of cyclists and car passengers involved in fatal accidents. While 19 car passengers and four cyclists were killed from May to August last year, the figure for this year was 15 and two respectively. Three mopedists were killed in this year's summer traffic, compared with six last year.
22 killed in August
713 road traffic accidents were reported to the police in August. 22 people were killed and 1 012 injured in these accidents. Comparative figures for August last year show that 19 people were killed and 1 062 injured on Norwegian roads, while the average figures for August in the period 1996-2005 are 29 fatalities and 1 021 injuries in August. Among the 22 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, there were six drivers of cars, five car passengers, six motorcyclists, one moped driver, one cyclist and three pedestrians.
Fewer accidents so far this year
139 people have been killed and 7 585 injured in road traffic accidents so far this year. This compares with 175 killed and 7 643 injured in the same period last year. The average for the period 1996-2005 is 190 killed and 7 427 injured in the first eight months of the year.
Police figures
The statistics are based on accidents reported to the police. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures. In addition, the total number of injuries includes casualties where the degree of injury has not been specified. Future figures may prove that there was no injury in some of these cases.
The figures for 2004 used in comparisons in this text are preliminary. The 2004 figures presented in tables 1-9 are final.
