22 killed and 1 059 injured in August

A total of 738 road traffic accidents were reported to the Norwegian police in August. 22 people were killed and 1 059 were injured in these accidents, according to preliminary figures.

In August 2005, the number of fatalities amounted to 22 killed while 1 012 were injured. Figures for the ten-year period 1997-2006 show that 28 were killed and 1 025 injured on average in August road traffic accidents. Among the 22 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, six were drivers of cars, one was car passenger, seven were motorcyclists, two were mopedists, one cyclist, five were pedestrians.

148 killed so far this year

148 people have been killed in road traffic accidents so far this year. This compares with 140 killed last year. The average figures from 1997-2006 show that 189 people were killed.


So far in 2006, nine children under the age of 13 years were killed in Norwegian traffic. Comparative figure for the same period in 2005 was two children killed, while the average for the last five years shows six children.

12 people in the age group 20-24 years have been killed so far in 2006, which is twelve fewer than in the same period of last year and twelve fewer than the average figure for the period 2002-2006. Seven of these people in the age group 20-24 were drivers of cars, two were car passengers and three were motorcyclists.

Decrease in number of injuries

The preliminary figures show that a total of 7 103 people have been injured in Norwegian road traffic so far in 2006. The comparative figure for 2005 was 7 585 injured, while the average for the period 1997-2006 is 7 429 injured in the first eight months of the year.

Police figures

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures. Total injured also include persons with degree of injury unspecified. In the future some of these persons may prove to be uninjured.

The accident figures for 2005 that are used for comparative purposes in this text are preliminary.
