Increased number of injured on the roads

A total of 553 road traffic accidents were reported to the Norwegian police in April, according to the preliminary figures. 12 persons lost their lives and 210 were seriously injured in these accidents. It was a strong increase of accidents with motorcycle.

Comparative figures for April last year show that 7 people were killed and 221 seriously injured on Norwegian roads, while the average figures for the period 1998-2007 are 18 fatalities and total 691 injuries in April. Of the 12 people killed in road traffic accidents last month, six were drivers of cars, two were car passengers, two drivers of motorcycles, one cyclist and one other road-user.

Strong increase in accidents with motorcycle and moped

100 motorcyclists and 89 persons on moped have been injured so far this year, compared with respectively 35 and 51 injured last year.

55 fatalities so far this year

A total of 55 people have lost their lives on Norwegian roads so far this year. The comparative figure from January to April last year was 52 killed, while the average figure for the same period in 2003-2007 is 66 persons killed.

Increase in number of injuries

The preliminary figures show that a total of 3 388 people have been injured in Norwegian road traffic so far in 2007. The comparative figure for January-April last year was 2 881 injured, while the average for the first four months from 1998 to 2007 is 3 112 injured.

A total of 1 811 drivers of cars and 974 car passengers were injured in the first four month this year. This is respectively 5 and 28 per cent more than in the same period last year.

According to the Norwegian police 110 cyclists were injured on the roads from January to April, while 57 were injured in the same period last year.

Police figures

The statistics are compiled from returns made by police authorities. Less severe accidents and injuries are therefore under-represented in the figures. Total injured also include persons with degree of injury unspecified. In the future some of these persons may prove to be uninjured.

The accident figures for 2006 that are used for comparative purposes in this text are preliminary.
