Accidents claimed 24 lives in May

24 people lost their lives in road traffic accidents in May this year, according to preliminary figures from the police. From January to May 103 people were killed. This is the highest number recorded for the period since 2004 and higher than the average over the last ten years.

The fatalities included ten vehicle drivers, eight passengers, one motorcyclist, two pedestrians and three other road users. More than half of those killed in road traffic accidents so far this year were vehicle drivers.

Young people at risk

14 of those who lost their lives on the roads last months were under 25 years of age. This is the highest May figure recorded for the age group in the last decade. From January to May this year 37 people aged 0 to 24 were killed, 14 more than in the corresponding period last year and higher than the average over the last ten years.

Police figures

The statistics are based on accidents reported to the police. Less severe accidents and injuries are often not reported to the police, and may therefore be underrepresented in the figures. The total number of injuries includes casualties where the degree of injury has not been specified. Around 28 per cent of the casualties reported in April 2008 belonged to this category. Some people registered in this category may be uninjured, and figures are subject to change.
